The whole idea that people spend their lives living in boxes, driving in boxes and working in boxes so that they can eventually die and be put in a box has always mystified me. When I decided to move the family into the bus, we changed our box like living circumstances from 55 square meters to 14 square meters and in so doing went rom paying $1200 a month to $0 a month, which meant that, all of a sudden, we had $14,400 a year in our budget to spend on quality of life.

We might have been living in a bus, but we could park anywhere and get out often. Out new box like structure had liberated us from location centric dwelling. We eventually settled down, temporarily, in a “wagon village” where the residents buy and convert old circus wagons into rooms that they can then link together to form a multi room dwelling. Some of the constructions are truly amazing. Her win Berlin, a very small community of about 100 people get to park and live on plots of land about 150 square meters in size, next to nature, for about €160 a month.

When you live in a place like this and see what the possibilities are, you start to ask yourself why this option is not more readily available to the masses. We would love to stay here in this wagon village, but are told we cannot because it is full. This, ultimately, leaves the nagging question, “where to next”, where can I find a place to permanently park my bus, buy some wagons and get on with the business of living next to the earth at a price I can afford?
