The Ukulele Bandito was a persona I created to help me get through the troubling times. The songs I write under this nom de plume are often infused with laughter, sarcasm, joy and love. I have always prided myself on getting an education even though I hold no degrees or certificates. Study has been at the centre of my life since very early on. I like learning big words and figuring gou how to use them in a sentence.

When I decided to be an artist my father pretty much withdrew his support. He was embarrassed by me and alway asked me why I did things like busk in public places. He never understood how goring up alone and isolated, as I did under his direction, made me want to connect with people, probably more so than most. Performance did that for me. He made it no secret that he thought a life pursing creative invention and art was a waste of time. He wanted money to play a central role in my life telling me that , without it, I would end up miserable.

What he didn’t tell me was that if I wasn’t miserable about not having money, people with money and conservative attitudes would endlessly do things to me to make me miserable, which was why I was going to need money. Despite this rejection, I feel I made the right choices. I always put people before profit and for that I have an incredible sense of satisfaction. I may never have made a million dollars, like he boasted to me once about his own position, but I did make a point of acquiring knowledge and knowledge is, in the end, power.

This song is about all of that.
