Not wearing any footwear, Simon runs through the snow of an open yard towards a bus stop where he waits for the next bus. After an encounter with the bus driver, Simon ends up on the street again. We follow him as he searches for clothes, shelter and food. Each target of his pursuit is met with some sort of obstacle that places him in danger of being returned to the hospital. After a time, he finds shoes and pants, but he is desperately cold. When it seems that he is about to succumb to the weather he comes upon the camp of a circus freak show. The band of freaks and weirdos take him in, give him a coat, some food and place by the fire. They start their show for the crowd that has assembled in their tent. He watches on in amazement as nails are inserted in noses, irons are lifted by nipples and beautiful tattooed women dance an exotic strip tease.

He stays with them for many weeks, working first as a stage hand and then standing out in front barking at the crowd and eventually performing some magic tricks. We see Simon develop the skills to do a street show and pass his hat.
